London: Simona Halep, World No 1 and French Open champion was exit from Wimbledon, defeated from Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-Wei 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 in the third round on Saturday. Karolina Pliskova is the only women at top seed get through and reach the fourth round of the Wimbledon. Hsieh who is the world rank number 48, bounced back from 2-5 down in the final set and Halep who served for the match at 5-3 in the decider. Halep who is the first women top seed to defeated from an unseeded player at Wimbledon since China’s Zheng Jie defeated Ana Ivanovic 10 years ago, also just after winning the French Open.
Hsieh’s first appearance in the last 16 of a Grand Slam where she will play against Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia to enter in the quarter-finals. It helps and boosted Serena Williams’s chances of becoming an eight-time Wimbledon champion. Williams, 36, who gave birth to her daughter in September, has huge dropped to 183rd in the world. In the last 12 months, she just playes only three but is seeded 25th at Wimbledon.
It was not the first time, Hsieh had beaten a player ranked in the top 10, although she tamed Spain’s Garbine Muguruza at this year’s Australian Open where she had a memorable run to the last 16.
Halep follows Caroline Wozniacki (2), Garbine Muguruza (3), Sloane Stephens (4), Elina Svitolina (5), Caroline Garcia (6), Petra Kvitova (8), Venus Williams (9) and Madison Keys (10) failed to continue her race in the tournament.
Taiwanese Hseih for the first time in her career to progress to the last 16 at Wimbledon, her previous best was the third round in 2012 and will face to Slovak Dominika Cibulkova in next match.
